Internet Marketing 101 - It's ALL in the Numbers

For most of us, money has to be considered to be a constant! Like all matter - It can neither be created nor destroyed! To all intents and purposes, there is a finite amount of money available that is simply transferred or swapped between individuals and corporations.

Let's face it, unless we are a government, we can't manufacture money! This means that if we are going to increase our overall wealth, we are going to have to do two things:

1) Convince people that there is a GOOD reason why they should give US some of their hard-earned cash.

2) Give less of OUR money to others than we collect.

There, in a nutshell, you have the basis of trying to make money on the Internet. You will notice that nothing above even mentions the word 'product'. In the 'virtual' world there is one cardinal difference: YOU NEVER ACTUALLY SEE WHAT YOU ARE GETTING UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE BOUGHT IT!

On the Internet, the world is upside down! In the REAL world, the first step is to find a GREAT product and then to come up with an outstanding marketing plan. Conventional marketers who have attempted to make the switch to on-line marketing have all too often fallen flat on their faces because they have fervently believed in the product without taking into account the vagaries and idiosyncracies of Internet commerce.

We said at the outset that Internet marketing is, was and always will be about numbers! We must never lose sight of the fact that numbers are impartial, they can either work for us or against us. You don't have to be a mathematician to be successful, but you DO have to understand how the numbers work. Otherwise, you will be sucked into the hype and glamour of the next "can't-lose", "blockbuster", "guaranteed money-maker" without even batting an eyelid.

So here's the math! FOUR very easy sums from early grade school:

0+0=0

1-1=0

1-1+1=1

1+1=2

There is a fifth almost mythical:

0+1=1

Believe it or not, this can cover almost EVERY Internet Marketing situation that you will EVER encounter! Let's take them in order:

0+0=0

Joining FREE, Spending NOTHING, Earning NOTHING, Wasting precious TIME & ENERGY!

Unfortunately, this is the most rampant scenario on the Internet today. The problem is that most of us dearly want to believe that we can get something for nothing. Look at the math folks! Unless we get divine intervention, it just will NEVER happen. The earlier that you learn this lesson, the fewer frustrations you will experience. Don't get into Internet Marketing because you believe that it is an easy way to make money without investment. IT JUST IS NOT SO!!!

1-1=0

Spending ALL your money, getting NOTHING back!

This is where you find this great "NEW" opportunity, you're caught up in the hype of that well-crafted sales page that caters to your GREED and desire to believe that you can get something for very little (YOUR dollar). You jump in headfirst and sit and wait for the 'spill-over' or other magnetic benefit that has been promised. Of course, it never happens. This is the second most common scenario. You MUST expect some of this before you REALLY get your feet wet.....

1-1+1=1

Spend ALL your money, get enough back to COVER your expenses!

This is the interim stage where you have started to learn what it is all about. You place your advertising and promotion dollar in the right places and make some sales. Still not earning a fortune but if you continue to learn as you earn, you're well on your way!

1+1=2

Use your money as SEED money and it MULTIPLIES!

You've learned your lessons! You know you have a product that sells and you know how and where to promote it. You leverage your own money to make even more. This should be your ultimate goal! It's not easy, but it CAN be done and there are many Internet millionaires out there to prove it!

And NOW, the 'HOLY GRAIL', the one that gets ALL the SUCKERS:

0+1=1

YOU spend NOTHING, YOU make MONEY! YEAH Right!......

We can't stop you from believing it! But keep on reading and perhaps the MATH of the situation will start to sink in! In reality, the best that you can hope for is 0+0=0!

Finally, let's put this all into context. Let's assume that the Internet is a pool of 1,000 people all wanting to make money!

Next, let's realize that 99% of Internet products are not tangible! You can't touch or feel what you are buying. In most cases, you are buying an opportunity to make money......

0+0=0

(750) Fully three quarters of our prospects will fall into category #1. They WON'T spend any money and they won't make any either! These are the ones who will get upset and whine and moan that they posted to all the (FREE) classifieds and FFA's and got absolutely nothing!

1-1=0

(150) These are the many folks who are truly SERIOUS about marketing but have not yet woken up to the fact that you can't just throw money at a problem in order to solve it. You have to have some kind of a PLAN. You have to MONITOR your advertising and promotional efforts and make adustments as necessary. Most of this category of marketer will give up in disgust before they ever even get to the next level.

1-1+1=1

(70) Now that they have learned their lessons, the seven percenters are on the road to success. They can't rest on their laurels though. Even though it is a great feeling once you have started to make some money (or at least get back some or all of what you have spent), you must not lose sight of the fact that the GOAL is to make money! You already head and shoulders above the crowd (90%), but the REALLY GREAT view is at the TOP!

(30) Yes, it's lonely at the TOP. Only 3 out of 100 will EVER really be successful. If you don't believe me, look at the math! Three quarters put nothing in. Can't make any money from this group. 10% are earning what they are spending. That means that you only have 15% that you can make money from! Remember, IF IT WAS THAT EASY, EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT! Let us not forget though, that this too, is mathematically impossible. Some MUST be net LOSERS in order for the successful to be net EARNERS.

Are YOU a Casualty of the SPAM War?

There is a battle being waged on the Internet and many of us are unwitting casualties!

Within the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the number of ISPs that are employing so called 'SPAM Filters' to validate incoming e-mail BEFORE it hits the user's Inbox.

There are two VERY DIFFERENT ways that this is being handled by the different ISPs. Some either allow the user to specify which if any filters will be applied or simply warn the user with a Subject line addition that the e-mail MAY be SPAM. The other method commonly used is simply to subject the e-mail to some arbitrary tests and to reject it WITHOUT EVEN NOTIFYING THE USER of its presence.

There are various different methods used to determine if a message is SPAM in the eyes of the ISP. Most use a test for the presence of certain words. In this case, imagine that you were sending an email to your friends or family about the SPAM issue itself. This email would ALMOST certainly FAIL the test! This is twenty-first century censorship!

The other favoured method of screening incoming e-mail is to check the incoming e-mail's source against a so-called 'BlackList' of senders. There are several companies or sites that maintain these lists. In most cases, the person or company applying or using the list has no idea about how the list was compiled. Those on the lists are often put there without their knowledge and without recourse.

Even worse, a website or user can find themselves a victim of e-mail blocking simply because their ISP or webhost is on a list due to some past infraction by a member or customer and EVERY IP ADDRESS for that ISP or webhost is systematically blocked. This tactic is used to try to prevent customers from using these supposed 'SPAMHOUSES'.

We ourselves are victims of this type of tactic, since our webhost with whom we have been doing business for over two years in on some of these lists. We can personally attest that the webhost is VERY attentive to SPAM issues and has, on occasion, temporarily supsended our account due to member's SPAM. In no way do they condone or allow SPAM from their service and yet they are blacklisted and EVERY SINGLE ONE of their clients along with them. We refuse to be railroaded into leaving an otherwise GREAT webhosting company due to the GESTAPO tactics of a self-appointed SPAMCOP!

We invite you to investigate the the SPAM War by going to your favourite search engine. You will be amazed at the rhetoric on both sides of the issue. If you discover that your e-mail is being filtered WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR INPUT, you should voice your concern to your ISP.

This is not an issue that is going to go away anytime soon. SPAM IS a serious problem. As an active Internet marketing company, we receive literally THOUSANDS of unwanted e-mails daily. Since most true SPAMMERS are able to work around the ANTI-SPAM measures, there is very little we can do to stop this. Our main line of defence is a great shareware program called 'MailWasher', which is available free of charge in our recommended download area. With this tool you can check your e-mail for both SPAM and viruses BEFORE it is downloaded to your machine. You can also 'BOUNCE' e-mail back to the sender, making it appear as if your mailbox is invalid. Be aware though that this only works if the message headers reflect the 'REAL' source of the email message.

This program promises to be one of those that will become a major player in the on-line marketplace like ROIbot and Make Your Site Sell each of which found a niche and then cornered the market in that area.
